HOW TO ARRIVE ON ELBA ISLAND
The island of Elba, pearl of the Tuscan Archipelago and beating heart of the Archipelago National Park, is easily reached by sea on the ferries which sail from the port of Piombino Marittima (province of Livorno). There are two shipping companies which run a large number of ferries (for passengers and vehicles) throughout the day: Toremar (www.toremar.it) and Moby Lines (www.moby.it).
It takes just one hour to cover about 10 km of sea and reach the port of Portoferraio, capital of Elba, and Rio Marina. There is also a high-speed passenger hydrofoil service which does the trip to Portoferraio in just under forty minutes.
By car:
Those travelling by car - to Piombino Marittima – from the north must take the A1 motorway, from Milan, and exit at Parma Ovest (West exit) to take the A15 motorway for Genoa-Livorno (A12). Leave the motorway at Rosignano and keep on along the Aurelia highway to Venturina-Piombino Marittima.
Those arriving from the north east must take the A1 Bologna-Florence-Pisa-Livorno motorway, exit at Rosignano and proceed to the port of Piombino. From the south, take the A 12 Rome-Grosseto motorway to Rosignano Marittima, then continue along the highway to Venturina-Piombino Marittima.
By air:
Elba is also accessible by air. La Pila airport, 2 km from Marina di Campo, is open all year but is particularly busy during the summer months. There are domestic flights to Milan Malpensa, Bergamo Olio al Serio, Bologna and Pisa.
The nearest Tuscan airports are Florence and Pisa. There are also international flights from Berne and Zurich (Switzerland) and Friedrichshafen and Munich (Germany). For information: 0039.0565.976011 - www.elbaisland-airport.it.
